WILBERS MODEL 641 SHOCK
So, that several-year-old Universal Japanese Motorcycle you´ve been pounding on for tens of thousands of miles - Suzuki Bandit, Honda VFR800, Yamaha FZ1, take your pick - is finally starting to feel loosey-goosey. Time for a suspension upgrade, eh? You´ve got a bunch of choices. We have covered most of the major shock companies´products in these pages - Öhlins, Penske, Progressive, Works Performance, etc. - but here is a name you have probably never heard: Wilbers. The German firm has been building custom shocks for specific bikes and rider weights at competitive prices for decades.
We ordered a Wilbers Model 641 shock for a Suzuki Bandit owned by a young friend of the magazine; throughly thrashed, the 40,000-mile machine had become a handling nightmare, so the shiny new Wilbers shock came as a welcome sight. With a multitude of adjustments including spring preload, rebound and both high- and low-speed compression damping, the remote-reservoir shock was relatively easy to intall. Construction and finish are exceptional, as is the shock´s performance, which the bike´s owner was able to evaluate on a meandering, 5000-mile trip back to the East Coast. Ride Quality was noticeable improved, and wheel control was excellent. The techs who set up the shock got it right the first time, making for a nearly ideal setup right out of the box. Wilbers offers a variety of shocks for just about every streetbike, with options including a choice of style (Sportsline with blue spring or Classic with black), a right-height adjuster or a remote hydraulic preload adjuster. The company also offers fork springs. And with a five-year warranty, their products are clearly a viable options.
